Repetition
Definition: An indirect or informal language stimulation technique where a targeted sound, word, phrase or sentence is said more than one time (Weybright, 1984). Definition taken from Sherri Fickenscher & Dan Salvucci
Chapter 7 – Listening And Spoken Language Strategies
EXAMPLE:
"Can you find the plane? (wait) can you find the plane for me?"
Therapist: "They ate bananas, apples, and oranges"
Child: "they ate oranges.....?"
Therapist: "They ate, bananas....apples....and oranges"
Explanation:
Repeat, repeat, repeat!! Again, it's all about that language input. If they don't get it correct the first time, say it again! Maybe slower, maybe with acoustic highlighting etc, but keep persisting! I also like repeating to teach as an advocacy skill. When I have my children repeat after me, or answer comprehension questions, I ALWAYS model "I didn't hear that, can you say it again?" for when its apparent that they did not follow what you said fully.
